GOWANDA, NY – A Village of Gowanda man was arrested Thursday for allegedly selling a $30,000 yellow submarine. That's not a crime in itself, except for the fact that the sub didn't belong to him.
Gerald K. Redford, Jr., 38, took advantage of the fact that a neighbor was away from home for a few days, according to a statement released by the Gowanda Police Department. When Redford saw a person examining his neighbor's submarine, he posed as a friend and agent of the submarine's owner and offered to sell it for $300. The third party agreed to the sale, paid the money, and arranged to have the sub towed away from the property on South Water Street.
The third party and the tow company did not know that Redford was not authorized to sell the submarine.
That third party and the tow company fully cooperated with police in the investigation of the incident. The stolen yellow submarine was later returned to its rightful owner.
Redford was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny. He's being held in the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $3,000 bail.
