AMHERST, NY – Bryant & Stratton College and WGRZ-TV Channel 2 are proud to announce Alice Georgitso of Amherst, NY as the second winner of The Great Give Back 2013.
A survivor of congenital heart disease, Alice Georgitso has already undergone three open-heart surgeries in just 23 years.
The last surgery came in her freshman year of college when she suffered an ischemic stroke. From that moment on the fighter in Alice came out. She put herself through speech therapy and enrolled in a master's program.
As part of the program, Alice was required to partake in field training which led her to the American Heart Association, an organization that she quickly connected with.
In the fall of 2012 Alice completed those field training hours but decided that she wanted to continue her volunteer work with the organization.
Since then she has participated in the "Launch a Local Survivor Gallery", coordinated a survivor fashion show, organized a Women's Health Expo that preceded the luncheon where women were both pampered and able to participate in health screenings, and on top of all of that, Alice regularly volunteers at the AHA office and runs logistical committees.
When asked to describe Alice in just a few words Liz Zolawski, Director of the American Heart Association put it simply:
"Alice radiates joy and positivity, and she is just one of those people who can give people motivation because she is so enjoyable to be around."
And Alice's volunteerism isn't done yet. She continues to be inspired by those around her and is still a catalyst in motivating others in our community to recognize the importance of heart health and volunteer their time.
As the first winner of The Great Give Back 2013, Bryant & Stratton College has donated $1,000 to the American Heart Association.
