BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo Police say a customer stabbed a North Buffalo liquor store employee while trying to shoplift items Friday evening at about 7:30 p.m.

The stabbing occurred at Gates Circle Fine Wine and Liquors, located at 1430 Delaware Avenue, across from Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Darnell Wells, 31, of Buffalo, was arrested a short time later and charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, petite larceny and other charges. Police also arrested his girlfriend, Shawna Boyd, 34, of Buffalo, who was punching employees and shouting obscenities during the struggle.

The 28-year-old male victim is listed in fair condition at Erie County Medical Center.

The store remained open Friday night after the incident.
