This week's Unique Place is The Family Room in Amherst- a fun and educational place for kids and parents to socialize.
AMHERST, NY- If you have a little one at home and you're looking for something to do indoors now that the cold weather is approaching, you should check out The Family Room in Amherst.
The Family Room is not a daycare. It's a place where mom, dads, grandparents and caregivers stay withtheir kids to play and socialize.
"They're engaging, exploring, learning, all while socializing and having recreational activity while being educated as well," said Kristen Norton-Null, The Family Room Co-Director and program leader.
They don't just do play groups. Families can go on field trips, too.
"We just did a field trip to Explore and More at Canalside, Greg's U-Pick Bluberry picking, as well as the Olcott Carousel Museum. We've been all over," said Norton-Null.
Kids can make friends here, and parents can make new friends, too. Social media parents groups can only go so far. Family Room parents say the face-to-face interaction is invaluable.
"If you're a new momma – or a been-there-done-that momma- you can trade ideas off of each other and the kids get some socialization. We love it. We've been coming here forever," said mother of two, Kerrie Daniels.
They've got age-appropriate toys for newborns to five-year-olds.
The Family Room has two locations -- the Harlem Road Community Center and the Northtown Center. They're open to all families year-round, for a moderate annual fee for families. Parents say they love it the most during Buffalo's long winters.
"It's too cold to play outside. Inside, there's so much to do. There's so much to see. There's so many friends to talk to. It's a lifesaver, it is. It keeps you from going crazy," said Daniels.
At the Northtown Center location, there's not only the Learning Center room, but also the "Big Room." That's where the kids can run, jump, climb, drive and eventually tucker themselves out!
