BUFFALO, N.Y. - The latest in a series of children's books about real life Coast Guard rescues is based on two cases from Western New York.
"The Adventures of Onyx and The Fight Against the Falls" features two local rescue cases - one which involved a boat that was too close to the brink of Niagara Falls and another about a boat that ran aground and sank near the Peace Bridge.
Petty Officer First Class Tyler Benson wrote his first book several years ago because he wanted something to help explain his job to his three daughters. Benson found numerous books for kids whose parents serve in the Army and Navy but nothing for so-called "Coastie kids."
"The Fight Against the Falls" was supposed to be the fifth book in the series, but Benson decided to release it sooner, before he was reassigned to a Coast Guard station in Virginia.
Benson calls book number three a sort of parting gift to Western New York.
"We came to Buffalo, and we didn't know what to expect. We fell in love with the area and with the people. This is not only my way of giving back to Buffalo but also to educate people about what the Coast Guard does to serve the citizens of Buffalo," said Benson.
