BATAVIA, NY -- For the third time in just a few weeks, vandals have violated the sanctuary of a Batavia cemetery and this time, in broad daylight.

The Superintendent of Elmwood Cemetery tells 2 On Your Side that he left the cemetery at 10 a.m.and came back around 4:30 p.m. Friday to find eight headstones, two urns, and a garbage can knocked over.

Davis said phones calls have been coming in from people asking if any of the headstones turned over were those of family members some of the same headstones flipped over, where the same ones vandalized before.

There have been two additional instances before this within the last couple weeks.

A total of 24 headstones were vandalized the first time in April, and 30 memorials vandalized the second time, all of which had to be replaced and repaired.

In the first two incidents, vandals struck the same area of the cemetery at night and during the weekend.

Batavia Police have added more patrols. Authorities explain usually in a case like this it's more than one person. Historically, juveniles are involved with cemetery vandalism. However, police will not limit their investigation based on that.
